Blue Stinger (ブルースティンガー) is an action survival horror game released in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast game console. It was localized in North America, Europe and Australia by Activision. This game was originally developed by a Japanese video game studio, Climax Graphics, and designed by then Climax CEO, Shinya Nishigaki. It was localized by Activision for the North American and European releases.

It is considered one of the Dreamcast's launch titles, notably first sold in North American stores on September 2nd 1999, a week before the Dreamcast's release.

Climax Graphics, later renamed Crazy Games, went on to make Illbleed, a third-person survival horror game on the Sega Dreamcast.

Gameplay[]

The main gameplay focuses on melee and ranged combat, featuring a wide range of weapons for both main characters, Eliot G. Ballade and Dogs Bower. The player has to fight against mutated half-human half-dinosaur monsters throughout Dinosaur Island while collecting items, keys, and keycards to progress through locked areas.

In the Japanese release, the game utilized a fixed-camera angle, similar to that of the Resident Evil series, but was changed to a third-person camera in the North American release. This change was met with both praise and criticism. Some argue that the change of camera style took away from dramatic tension, while others argue that the third-person camera gives the player more control.

The game's notorious for its drastic switches in tone, out-of-place bombastic soundtrack, and sub-par voice dubbing. Sources say that Ryan Drummond, the voice actor for Eliot, was paid only $100 for this role. Regardless, this game, like Climax Graphics' other game Illbleed, garners a small cult following for these reasons.

Setting[]

Blue Stinger is set on Christmas Eve 2018, in a research base on Dinosaur Island. The research base features many different buildings and installations, including a power plant, an underground cloning facility, and a Christmas-themed market and entertainment district.
